A Note on Methods

This list was generated first by a simple Google search looking for "college OR university" and "library". Eventually, I used a list of academic libraries for each state. At each university I looked for their policies.

Most sites did not have codes of conduct or the like. To be included in this list, the site had to have a fairly generic list of regulations, pretty much in some organized fashion. The most popular policies seemed to contain "Unattended Children," "Food and Drink," "Inline Skates," and "Animals".

There were many sites that just had a smoking or a food/drink policy. I did not include those as a general rule, unless it looked like they were truly publishing a complete list.

I made every effort to make this a representative sample (with of course the caveat that the sites are in some sense self-selected by putting themselves on the internet.) But, I always decided about whether a policy list looked complete enough before looking to see if it also contained a shoe rule. In a few cases, the policy mentioned "proper attire" without specifically mentioning shoes. I counted those as "no shoe rule," but also included the text, as it's really anybody's guess just what is enforced.
